GUILD FORMS

TO PRESERVE COLLECTOR RIGHTS

In the face of mounting challenges to the hobby, a new effort has been launched to provide collectors of ancient coins with the political presence and consumer protection that their increasing numbers deserve. The Ancient Coin Collectors Guild (ACCG), a non-profit organization, aspires to become the central voice of collectors on hobby related issues that require unified action.

An immediate concern of the organization is the growing trend toward legislation that proposes to restrict the importation of coins more than 100 years old into the United States. In this regard, the work of the ACCG will be of interest and importance to many collectors of coins that are considered Medieval or even Modern.

The Guild has established a Legislative Action Task Force, led by Peter K. Tompa, and will be proactive in carrying the collector's message to Congress. The ACCG is also developing, through its Education and Youth Programs Task Force, led by Kerry K. Wetterstrom, a far-reaching program of public education to highlight the many contributions that private numismatists have made to our understanding of the past. This task force will also strive to increase educational opportunities for individual collectors, particularly among the hobbies junior members.

Political and Educational issues are high on the list of ACCG priorities, but the Guild will also focus intently on its role as a service organization to ancient coin collectors and collector organizations.

The Guild operates under the guidance and review of a Board of Directors, with an Executive Director serving as the focal point for internal activity. A charter Board of recognizable hobby leaders has guided and approved the organizational structure and mission development of the ACCG. Members of this Board include: David Hendin; Bill Puetz; Wayne G. Sayles; David R. Sear; Peter K. Tompa; David Vagi and Kerry K. Wetterstrom. The position of Executive Director will be filled initially by Wayne Sayles.

The ACCG is open to general membership as well as to the Affiliate Membership of local or regional clubs.
