Release Ceremony and Coin Exchange of the Michigan Innovation Dollar

Release Ceremony and Coin Exchange of the Michigan Innovation Dollar

Since 2018 the United States Mint has been honoring the individual states with a commemorative dollar highlighting innovations that are attributed to each state. Like the 50 State Quarters program, it follows the order in which the states joined the Union. As the 26th state, Michigan is slated to receive the second Innovation Dollar released this year. The dollar celebrating Michigan’s innovation of the automobile assembly line will be released by the U.S. Mint on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at noon on the Mint’s website at https://usmint.gov/.

The Michigan State Numismatic Society (MSNS) is excited to announce that there will be a Release Ceremony for the 2025 Michigan Innovation Dollar. It will be held on Tuesday, April 8, at the Detroit Historical Museum, 5401 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI 48202. Doors open at the side entrance at 10 a.m., with a brief official ceremony at about 10:30 a.m., followed by a coin exchange of the new dollar.

The event is coordinated by the Honorable Steven Bieda, Michigan’s official liaison to the U.S. Mint. The event is held in conjunction with MotorCities National Heritage Area and the Michigan History Foundation. Dignitaries from the auto industry, history organizations and local and national numismatic groups will attend, including ANA President Thomas Uram and MSNS President Kathy Freeland.

Following the program, the Innovation Dollar will be available to exchange dollar for dollar. You may exchange a cash dollar and receive a Michigan Innovation Dollar in its place (cash only). To ensure that everyone has a chance to obtain the new dollar coin, there will be a strict limit of one coin per person.

Admission to the museum for the event is free, and the event is open to the public. The Detroit Historical Museum is located at 5401 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI 48202. Click here for a map of the location and directions.
